The energy policy framework promotes new developments on renewables through sustainable production of energy and direct use of natural resources. For this purpose, Paraguay aims at taking advantage of alternative energy sources such as solar and wind energy, in addition to further developments in small and large hydropower.
Therefore, Paraguay is aiming to diversify its energy mix through the promotion of other renewable energy resources and the implementation of low carbon-technologies such as green hydrogen. Renewable energy technologies are an afordable option for the diversification of the Paraguayan energy mix.
Paraguay's National Energy Policy 2016-2040 recognises the importance of the energy sector for economic growth by increasing the country's productivity and promoting sustainable development. The energy sector is a key contributor to human development (UNDP, 2020) and job creation.
In recent years, the share of fossil fuels in Paraguay's energy mix has grown. The country's increasing dependence on these fuels has resulted in rising greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector, adversely afecting Paraguay's energy security and climate commitments.
